Insurance Company Hell
In my first of law school my contracts professor, who was also at one point in house counsel for a major insurance company, said that there is a special place in hell for insurance companies. Those were one of those quotes that just stuck with me all the way through law school. The way she said and her firm belief in it made me want to take insurance law. After that class, I was under the firm belief that she was right.
However, what I read this morning solidified my belief that those people are cold hearted bastards. Essex Insuarnce Company has decided not to cover under an insurance policy a pair of the original ruby slippers from the "Wizard of OZ" that were stolen recently from a Northern Minnesota Museum. The museum is in Grand Rapids, MN, the birthplace of Judy Garland, a sort of mecca for Fags. Well, I might be pushing it, but she is an icon to gay pop culture.
I wonder if this denial of an insurance claim is based on more than a general exclusion of a policy. Could it be based on homophobia? I also read a couple of days ago that Focus on the Family was pulling out all their money from all Wells Fargo Institutions because of their stance on GLBT rights. It is true the money talks. The good thing that the GLBT community does have a lot of money, and we should use that to support GLBT friendly organizations.
Whatever the case may be, watch out for the insurance companies...they are all in it for the money.
